Former SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng's application to have his disciplinary hearing collapsed into a CCMA process was denied yesterday.

Motsoeneng had made an application for the matter to be heard concurrently with other charges against him at the CCMA, his lawyer Andy Bester said at his disciplinary hearing.

Motsoeneng is facing charges of bringing the public broadcaster into disrepute and breaching the terms of his suspension following a media briefing he held in Parktown on April 19.

Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha says he cannot accede to a DA request to pressure the National Prosecuting Authority into probing Nkandla.

Masutha was briefing the media yesterday ahead of his department's budget vote in Parliament, and said DA leader Mmusi Maimane's request was asking him to interfere with the NPA's independence.

Maimane on Monday wrote to the National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams asking him to furnish them with a decision on whether to prosecute or not prosecute President Jacob Zuma over security upgrades to his homestead.

The ANC wants to increase public funding for political parties, and also greater transparency on the funding parties receive from private donors.

ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu yesterday announced that the party will propose an ad hoc committee of Parliament to deal with this matter.

He said the effective functioning of political parties was fundamental to the promotion of constitutional democracy.

Mthembu said that political parties require adequate funding in order to perform their functions and enhance democracy, and the manner and transparency of such funding are paramount in the context of building public confidence in our political system.
