Making headlines: Early results suggest ANC to retain power, Western Cape premier candidate Alan Winde confident DA will retain province and, voting has lost its shine for youth since 1994

Early results suggest ANC to retain power

Early vote tallies suggest South Africa's ruling ANC will retain power after an election on Wednesday, but analysts said its share of the vote could fall below 60% for the first time since the end of white minority rule.

In the parliamentary vote, the ANC was on 55%, with the main opposition DA on nearly 26% and the leftist EFF on nearly 9%.

The elections are the first barometer of national sentiment since President Cyril Ramaphosa replaced scandal-plagued Jacob Zuma as head of state in February 2018.

Western Cape premier candidate Alan Winde confident DA will retain province

DA Western Cape premier candidate Alan Winde is confident the party will retain control of the province.

Speaking at the IEC results centre in Cape Town on Thursday, a day after national elections, Winde said it was "so far, so good" for the DA despite the polls predicting the opposite at the end of last year.

Winde said it had been a tough and gruelling campaign after months of bitter political infighting which saw former Cape Town mayor Patricia De Lille being booted out of the party under a cloud of corruption allegations.

Voting has lost its shine for youth since 1994

The youth does not have any interest in voting, DA North West premier candidate Joe McGluwa said on Thursday.

He said with what was happening regarding corruption in the country, people do not trust politicians and political parties any more.

He said it was up to all the political parties to get everybody, including the youth, on board.
