Making headlines: Ramaphosa urges support for South African media, ANC national working committee to deliberate step-aside resolution and, the first batch of Pfizer vaccines arrives in SA

 

Ramaphosa urges support for South African media

President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday called on South Africans to continue to safeguard the country’s media freedom, following South Africa’s ranking of 32 in media freedom, compared with 180 other countries.

Last week, Reporters without Borders published its 2021 World Press Freedom Index assessing global media freedom.

The index describes the state of media freedom in South Africa as "guaranteed but fragile".

 

ANC national working committee to deliberate step-aside resolution

Ramaphosa pointed out that the South African media had played a pivotal role in uncovering much of what the country knows today about the true extent of State capture.

The African National Congress's national working committee is expected to meet today to again discuss the implementation of its resolution that members charged with serious offences should step aside.

This comes after the deadline passed for corruption-accused secretary-general Ace Magashule to step down or face expulsion.

Magashule didn't budge when the deadline came and his supporters in the Free State's Fezile Dabi region have threatened to interdict the national executive committee if it forces him out.

 

The first batch of Pfizer vaccines arrives in SA

The first batch of Pfizer Covid-19 vaccines has landed at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

In a social media post today, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said the more than 300 000 doses arrived in South Africa on Sunday night.

A weekly arrival of the same number of doses is expected until the end of May, which will provide the country's vaccination programme with 1.3-million doses by the end of the month.
