One-seat AIC councillor elected as Ekurhuleni mayor

The ANC and Economic Freedom Fighters used their majority in the Ekurhuleni council to elect African Independent Congress councillor Sivuyile Ngodwana as the new mayor.

Ngodwana bagged 129 votes, defeating Democratic Alliance councillor and former mayor, Tania Campbell, who received 75 votes.

Campbell was removed from office hours before a motion of no confidence, sponsored by the ANC and EFF.

The removal of Campbell came after the ANC and EFF cooperated in other hung metros in Gauteng, where they have effectively installed mayors they backed.

 

eThekwini to recruit more law enforcement to tackle crime

eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said his municipality is planning to recruit more law enforcement officers to tackle the escalating incidents of crime in the city.

Speaking at the city’s council meeting, he pointed out a growing trend of mass killings, particularly in the outer west areas.

Currently, the municipality has 200 Metro Police trainees who are at college, with the recruitment of an additional 200 members being finalised.

As from 2024, 400 new police officers will be recruited each year.

 

ConCourt Justice says 'Patriarchal tendencies' taint judiciary's approach to gender-based violence

Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga says the judiciary isn't free from blame for the horrifyingly high figures of gender-based violence in South Africa.

He said judges sometimes didn't handle cases of GBV the way they should. He was speaking after being conferred with a Doctor of Laws degree by Rhodes University.

Madlanga revealed that 988 women were killed in South Africa between April 2020 and September 2022, by men, in acts of domestic violence.

He said this was just the tip of the iceberg, as other cases may not be recorded correctly.
