Minerals Council SA filed application against parts of 2018 mining charter

Minerals Council South Africa said it has filed an application today for the judicial review and setting aside of certain clauses of the mining charter.

The council said it was engaged in ongoing attempts to reach a compromise with mineral resources minister Gwede Mantashe on "certain provisions that are problematic for the industry, and which would be detrimental to its sustainability".

CEO Roger Baxter reiterated the stance of the council, that most aspects of the charter represented a reasonable and workable framework, but that the provision that it did not fully recognise the continuing consequences of previous empowerment transactions was untenable.

IMF says Mozambique to recover economically despite cyclone

Despite the likely adverse macroeconomic effects of Cyclone Idai, Mozambique expects a recovery in economic activity over the medium-term, boosted by gas production, the International Monetary Fund has said.

Estimates show that more than 700 people have been killed and hundreds are missing after the cyclone wreaked havoc in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

The IMF said while it was still early to precisely assess the impact of the cyclone and reconstruction costs, these would be significant.

ACDP to welcome former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor

The African Christian Democratic Party yesterday announced that former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor would join the party.

A media briefing to welcome Mentor and others is expected tomorrow.

Mentor is a former chairperson of the parliamentary portfolio committee on public enterprises. She has also claimed that the Gupta family offered her a Cabinet post in return for political favours.
