Phahlane arrested on new charges linked to R86m blue lights tender

Former acting police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane has been arrested – this time on new charges stemming from an Independent Police Investigative Directorate investigation into an R86-million blue lights tender.

The charges stem from a 2016 tender awarded to Instrumentation Traffic Law Enforcement, owned by millionaire Vimpie Manthatha.

Along with Phahlane, Major General Ravichandran Pillay the head of South African Police Service supply chain management, was also nabbed early on Friday morning.

They are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Commercial Crimes Court later on today on charges of fraud and corruption.

Peter Pedlar's contract as acting secretary of Zondo Inquiry extended for one month

Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo said on Friday that Peter Pedlar will continue as acting secretary of the Commission of Inquiry into allegations of State capture until the end of March.

Pedlar, a corporate governance expert, was appointed as acting secretary of the Commission from January 22 to 28 February, pending the outcome of the investigation against permanent secretary, Dr Khotso De Wee who requested special leave following allegations of him taking bribes.

The risk of load-shedding for Friday and the weekend is high, according to Eskom.

No load-shedding was implemented yesterday due to some generating units returning to service, however the risk of load-shedding for[Friday and the weekend remains high.

Eskom needs to replenish emergency reserves, such as water and diesel, to limit the possibility of load-shedding in the following week.
