Making headlines: 'Havoc' for rand amid plans to nationalise Reserve Bank, Madikizela-Mandela's name top of the list for Cape Town International Airport name change And, Eskom warns about load-shedding at short notice

'Havoc' for rand amid plans to nationalise Reserve Bank

President Cyril Ramaphosa's announcement that government intends to continue with plans to nationalise the central bank caused "havoc" in dealing rooms, according to Bianca Botes, Corporate Treasury Manager at Peregrine Treasury Solutions.

The rand opened at R14.50 to the greenback today, and weakened to 0.25% to trade at R14.54/$ by 10:10.

Ramaphosa, answering questions in the Parliament yesterday, said the State intended to move ahead with plans to do away with the bank's over 700 private shareholders.

This follows a resolution by the African National Congress at its 54th conference at Nasrec in 2017 – where Ramaphosa was elected ANC president.

Madikizela-Mandela's name top of the list for Cape Town International Airport name change

Struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's name is number one on the list of names being considered for the renaming of Cape Town International Airport, ANC national executive committee member Nocawe Mafu said during a party dialogue at Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg.

Mafu was speaking to a gathering of women discussing gender policy in South Africa.

She was responding to a question posed by radio host Criselda Kananda-Dudumashe.

Eskom warns about load-shedding at short notice

Eskom says load-shedding could be implemented at short notice today, as the power system remains tight and vulnerable.

The power giant said while it was making every effort to limit load-shedding, it could be implemented at short notice should there be a shift in plant performance.

Yesterday, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa announced that it had approved electricity hikes of 9.41%, 8.1% and 5.2% for the next three financial years, far below Eskom’s application for double-digit tariff increases.
