Ramokgopa says assessment will determine what powers he needs to close 10 GW electricity deficit

Newly-appointed Minister of Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, reports that he will conduct an assessment over the coming seven to 14 days to help determine what powers he will request President Cyril Ramaphosa to tackle a supply deficit of about 10 000 megawatts.

Ramokgopa’s deficit estimate is larger than the 4 000 megawatts to 6 000 megawatts shortfall previously communicated by Eskom.

When announcing Ramokgopa’s appointment, the President said he would transfer certain powers and functions contained in relevant legislation to the new Minister in the Presidency in line with Section 97 of the Constitution.

 

ANC Women's League hails Ntshavheni, Ramokgopa Cabinet appointments as 'progressive'

The African National Congress Women's League believes the increase in the appointment of women in President Cyril Ramaphosa's reshuffled Cabinet is proof that "there are no echelons women do not belong in". 

Yesterday, Ramaphosa announced former Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, as the Minister in the Presidency. 

The ANC's second deputy secretary-general, Maropene Ramokgopa, was appointed as the Minister in the Presidency in charge of monitoring, planning and evaluation. 

Ramokgopa, a close Ramaphosa ally, was expected to be appointed as a minister following her swearing-in as a member of Parliament in February.

 

Sars confirms Ramaphosa and Phala Phala are 'compliant' taxpayers

The South African Revenue Services has said President Cyril Ramaphosa and his companies - Ntaba Nyoni Estate, and Ntaba Nyoni Feedlot - "are compliant with their tax obligations to date."

Sars Commissioner Edward Kieswetter made the announcement following "considerable public interest and concern" in the president's affairs.

This followed the revenue service's announcement that Hazim Mustafa, the Sudanese businessman who paid $580 000 in cash to Ramaphosa's Phala Phala farm, did not declare the money he brought into the country in December 2019.
