Zweli Mkhize reflects on a year of Covid-19

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has lauded South Africans and frontline workers who have helped lessen the full effects of Covid-19, as the country marks one year since the virus hit our shores.

Mkhize on Friday said that it has been a very rough journey with a lot being learnt, mistakes being made and a lot being achieved.

Mkhize was speaking at Grey's Hospital in Pietermaritzburg where Premier Sihle Zikalala and Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu remembered the first ever infection, a 38-year-old Hilton man who had travelled to Italy in 2020.

Mkhize thanked South Africans for cooperating with government’s lockdown regulations to fight the spread of the virus in the country.

SA finalising sale of 1 million AstraZeneca vaccine doses to African Union

South Africa is finalising the sale of 1-million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to the African Union.

The sale will come cheap, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has revealed.

He said local scientists were still working on research regarding the efficacy of the vaccine.

He explained that the AU will buy the doses from South Africa at the same cost spent at the Serum Institute of India.

And, 10 candidates shortlisted for Human Rights Commission vacancies

The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services on Friday shortlisted 10 candidates for the roles of commissioner and deputy chairperson at the South African Human Rights Commission.

The committee called for applications in November last year to fill the two vacancies, after the death of the deputy chairperson of the SAHRC Priscilla Jana, and the end of term of Advocate Mohamed Shafie Ameermia.

The committee initially received 59 applications for the vacancies.

Justice and Correctional Services Portfolio Committee chairperson Bulelani Magwanishe said candidates would be interviewed next week on Tuesday and Wednesday.
