Making headlines: South Africa's economy grew by 0.8% in 2018, Hawks swoop on Rustenburg municipality over alleged tender fraud worth R85 million and, eight SABC board hopefuls take the hot seat

 

South Africa's economy grew by 0.8% in 2018

StatsSA has announced this morning that South Africa's economy grew by 1.4% in the fourth quarter of 2018.

The figure of 1.4% was slightly above the consensus estimates of most analysts and economists of 1.2% growth.

This means that annual real GDP increased by a tepid 0.8% in 2018. This was 0.1% more than the projections of most economists.

South Africa's economy fell into a technical recession in the first half of 2018, after experiencing two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth.

 

Hawks swoop on Rustenburg municipality over alleged tender fraud worth R85 million

The Hawks raided the Rustenburg local municipality in North West today, conducting a search and seizure at the municipality in relation to tender fraud worth approximately R85-million.

According to sources, there were a lot of tender irregularities, including those of companies who were financial service providers.

 

Eight SABC board hopefuls take the hot seat

Parliament’s portfolio committee on communications will start the process of filling eight vacancies on the SABC’s board today, when the committee interviews 8 of its 24 shortlisted candidates.

Four board members – Mathatha Tsedu, Krish Naidoo, John Mattison and Khanyisile Kweyama – resigned from the board in December last year.

The committee drafted a shortlist of 24 candidates last week, from an initial pool of over 300.

The shortlist includes former SABC CEO Lulama Mokhobo, media veteran and a member of the South African National Editors Forum council, Mary Papayya, and former director general at the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services, Gift Buthelezi.
