SA citizens in Wuhan heading back home,

With the immediate repatriation of 151 South Africans from Wuhan in China, the government says it has already started implementing plans to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in South Africa.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said following the President's directive for the repatriation of asymptomatic South African citizens in Wuhan City, where the epicentre of the outbreak is, such contingency plans are now being effected as a matter of extreme urgency.

Of the 201 South Africans in Wuhan, 16 have elected not to come back home while 151 indicated they wanted to return.

 

DA welcomes new Hawks investigation into illegal VBS investments

South Africa's main opposition Democratic Alliance said on Monday it welcomed news that the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, the Hawks, in Pretoria, had opened a new case in connection with illegal investments involving the failed VBS bank.

The South African Reserve Bank placed VBS under curatorship in 2018 and released a report showing that some 50 people gratuitously received nearly R1.9-billion from the Limpopo-based institution over a three-year period.

The DA said it is unacceptable for citizens to be at the losing end of the stick because of the decision of the ANC-led government to illegally invest public funds with a mutual bank.

 

Likelihood of load-shedding grows as more generation units trip

Eskom says that while it still does not expect to implement rotational load-shedding on Monday, the likelihood of power cuts has increased.

The struggling power utility said overnight some generation units tripped unexpectedly, further reducing available capacity.

Eskom added that some generation units are expected to return to service on Monday and Tuesday, which would improve the power system outlook for the week.
