Court rules Jiba and Mrwebi should not be struck off the roll of advocates

The Constitutional Court has dismissed an application by the General Council Bar to have former National Prosecuting Authority officials Nomgcobo Jiba and Lawrence Mrwebi struck of the roll of advocates.

The GCB had argued that the two should be struck off over the “illegal” withdrawal of criminal charges against former crime intelligence boss Richard Mdluli.

The GCB initially succeeded when it filed its application before the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, but lost when Jiba and Mrwebi took the matter to the Supreme Court of Appeal. 

 

AA says large fuel price drop expected for July

The Automobile Association says lower international oil prices have set up a substantial fuel price drop for July.

The association said it is expecting the petrol to drop by 86 cents a litre, diesel by 68 cents, and illuminating paraffin by 58 cents next month. The AA said this reduction could have been greater had it not been for the rand.

The AA was commenting on unaudited month-end fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund. 

The current inland price for a litre of unleaded 95 octane petrol is R16.76. If the price does fall by 86 centre per litre, the new inland price will be R15.90 per litre. 

 

And, Mminele retires as SARB deputy governor

South African Reserve Bank deputy governor Daniel Mminele will retire when his second five-year term expires on June 30.

Mminele has advised President Cyril Ramaphosa and the SARB board of his decision not to serve another term.

Mminele currently serves as South Africa’s Group of 20 and Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa central bank deputy, and as chairperson of the International Monetary and Financial Committee deputies of the International Monetary Fund.

The reserve bank extended its thanks to Mminele for his service and commitment and wished him well for the future.
