Eskom welcomes Trillian judgment

Eskom has welcomed a high court judgement ordering Trillian to pay back the R595-million it earned in an "unlawful and invalid" contract.

The Gupta-linked advisory firm was ordered by the High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday to pay back the money after the utility in March 2018 launched a bid to set aside its payments to the firm as well as global consultancy McKinsey. McKinsey paid back close to R1-billion last year.

Eskom chairperson Jabu Mabuza said the debt-laden utility "looks forward to receiving the money".

 

IFP's Mkhuleko Hlengwa to chair Parliament's watchdog on public accounts

Inkatha Freedom Party MP Mkhuleko Hlengwa is set to chair Parliament's watchdog on public accounts.

The IFP said it had accepted an offer by the African National Congress, which has the majority in Parliament, to chair the standing committee on public accounts.

Hlengwa, at 32, is one of the youngest MPs in the National Assembly, having served in the legislature since 2014.

He served on Scopa and, along with his colleagues on the committee, is known for being tough on government officials when it comes to tackling corruption, the wasting of taxpayers' money and other forms of malfeasance.

 

And, Malema say the the judiciary is about to be captured

Judgment in the land occupation case against Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema was reserved by the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court.

The State and defence agreed to a postponement in anticipation of the outcome of a related High Court challenge Malema has lodged.

Addressing supporters outside the court in Bloemfontein, Malema warned that the judiciary was about to be captured.

He said the country could not have judges that sought to impress politicians and warned that if the judiciary were to be captured, it would spell the end of the country.
