Govt to launch actions aimed at empowering youth

This week, government is set to launch a range of actions to create opportunities for the youth as the country gears up to celebrate Youth Day on Wednesday.

In his weekly letter to the nation President Cyril Ramaphosa said these measures aim to enhance skills development, support young entrepreneurs and allow for the participation of the youth in the country’s economy.

SA Youth, a national pathway management network, will be established to help young South Africans access opportunities in the labour market, as well as receive support.

Ramaphosa pointed out that the Covid-19 pandemic has worsened unemployment, which is the greatest problem facing the country’s youth.

 

ANC to lay fraud charges in JP Smith qualifications scandal

Senior ANC members are planning to lay fraud charges against City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith.

This comes after alleged fraudulent statements were made on Smith's CV.

Smith is the latest DA member to become embroiled in a qualifications scandal after a biography emerged which stated that Smith had an honours degree in English from Stellenbosch University.

Smith had since voluntarily subjected himself to a probe by the party's Federal Legal Commission.

 

7 657 more Covid-19 cases, with 59 new deaths recorded

South Africa recorded 7 657 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 infections and 59 deaths, bringing the latest death toll to 57 765.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, the country recorded 1 747 082 laboratory-confirmed cases.

Gauteng is the most impacted, with 505 322 confirmed cases, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 343 389 and the Western Cape at 301 142.
