Unions agree to give SAA one week to deal with their demands on Jarana

Workers unions at the South African Airways has said the State-owned airline has requested one week to deal with their demands of reinstating Vuyani Jarana as group chief executive and a complete overhaul of the board.

This as the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and the South African Cabin Crew Association on Thursday met the SAA board over the workers' grievances following Jarana's resignation two weeks ago.

The unions said their key demand is that Jarana must be reinstated immediately for having produced a turnaround strategy which won the support of government and the board and the unions.

Defence blasts Ipid for shoddy investigation after Marikana shooting in 2012

The North West High Court has heard that police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, did not properly follow its mandate in its investigations of the Marikana 2012 massacre.

Advocate Jan Ellis said the Ipid did not do its job as prescribed in the act.

Ellis was cross-examining the investigator in the trial against former North West police deputy commissioner Major-General William Mpembe, Gideon van Zyl, Dingaan Madoda and Oupa Pule, who were charged with contravening the Independent Police Investigative Directorate Act, defeating the ends of justice and contravening the Commissions Act.

Zambian president predicted to retain power after next elections

Zambian President Edgar Lungu and his ruling Patriotic Front party will probably remain in power after the next elections in 2021, according to a new report released by the UK based Economics Intelligence Unit.

It has been reported that although the report cited some challenges with the Zambian economy, many of which are not unique to the country, the PF administration had come up with appropriate and timely responses.

One of Lungu’s strengths, according to the Unit, is that he continues to inspire investor confidence by ensuring that the mining sector continues to fall under the control of the private sector.
