South Africa sees 5 500 MW more renewable energy online by 2026

South Africa expects more than 5 500 MW of additional renewable energy projects to come online by 2026, Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said today.

He added that 66 000 MW of wind and solar projects were under development across the country.

South Africa is in the midst of its worst electricity crisis ever, with households and businesses facing hours of daily scheduled power cuts.

This is due to repeated breakdowns at State utility Eskom's ailing fleet of coal power stations.

DA lures former ANC branch secretary and 100 others

The leader of the Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal, Francois Rodgers, and Msunduzi councillors welcomed more than 100 former ANC members to the party at the weekend.

It includes a former ANC councillor, Thami Sithole, who was previously the branch secretary in the Moses Mabhida region.

Rodgers said it boosted the party's quest to wrestle the province from the ANC, via a cooperation plan with the Inkatha Freedom Party, in the 2024 general elections.

Rodgers said the ANC had systematically collapsed the Msunduzi municipality and added that the DA was the only alternative that could save it.

The IFP and the DA have been plotting to dethrone the ANC in the province amid several governance issues.

Parts of Joburg without electricity for days

Parts of Johannesburg have been without electricity for days after delays hit City Power in restoring power to the Cydna substation.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said late on Monday night that the Inanda distributor from Cydna tripped on Saturday due to multiple cable faults affecting several areas, including Melrose, Athol, Inanda, Illovo and surrounds.

"The team worked tirelessly throughout the weekend, day and night, often through waterlogged streams, to ensure repairs are done and power is restored.”

Mangena said every attempt to restore power was thwarted by further faults down the line on the same cable.
