SAA announces new acting CEO

South African Airways announced on Friday that it has appointed Zukisa Ramasia as its acting CEO while it looks for a permanent replacement.

Ramasia was previously general manager of operations.

The board made the announcement following the resignation of its CEO Vuyani Jarana last week. Jarana unpacked how uncertainty about funding and slow decision making processes were delaying the airline's turnaround strategy

ANC economic policy head denies call to change SARB mandate

President Cyril Ramaphosa, in his capacity as ANC president, has put out a statement to say the mandate of the South African Reserve Bank had not changed and public debate about the role of the central bank was "not helpful".

This comes in the wake of ANC secretary general Ace Magashule telling reporters on Tuesday that the party’s National Executive Committee had resolved to expand the Reserve Bank’s mandate and investigate the possibility of quantitative easing at its weekend meeting.

This was, in turn, denied by Finance Minister and fellow NEC member, Tito Mboweni, who said no decision was made to change its mandate.

The uncertainty unsettled markets, with the rand falling below R15/$ for the first time in eight months.

Parliament to get down to business after Sona

Parliament will only get down to serious business when President Cyril Ramaphosa delivers his second State of the Nation Address on June 20.

The programme was agreed to at the first meeting of the 6th Parliament's Programming Committee on Thursday.

Next week will be used to induct MPs, while Sona will be debated on June 25, with Ramaphosa replying the next day.

On June 27, the National Assembly will elect its house chairpersons and representatives to the Pan-African Parliament, South African Development Community Parliamentary Forum, Judicial Service Commission and Magistrates Commission.
