Making headlines: ANC hits out at 'racist' Shivambu; Public Protector explains why she didn't send delegation to Parliament; And, CPS to get the boot from Sassa offices by end of July

 

ANC hits out at 'racist' Shivambu

The ruling ANC has lashed out at the "blatant racist nationalism" on the part of the opposition EFF, following EFF deputy chairperson Floyd Shivambu's attack on "non-African" Treasury deputy director-general Ishmail Momoniat this week. 

Shivambu received a storm of criticism when he objected to Momoniat’s “repeated presence” in finance committee meetings, citing his race. 

Shivambu is reported to have said that he thinks Momoniat undermines Africans and accused him of not taking the director-general, the finance minister or the deputy finance minister seriously. Shivambu went on to allege that Momoniat thinks he is superior to the Ministers and that he makes all the decisions and is always in Parliament

The ANC late last night issued a statement in which it defended Momoniat and labelled the comments as "bordering on extreme racism".

 

Public Protector explains why she didn't send delegation to Parliament

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has attempted to clarify her reasons for not sending a delegation to Parliament yesterday in her stead, after she requested a late postponement due to a "family emergency".

Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Justice was due to hear from Mkhwebane on her office's policy around appointing special advisors, as Mkhwebane had done recently, as well as to consider a renewed request to institute an inquiry into her fitness to hold office.

MPs were especially upset that a delegation was not arranged beforehand, nor a soft copy of her presentation sent, as those processes were usually confirmed a few days in advance.

 

And, CPS to get the boot from Sassa offices by end of July

The South African Social Security Agency says plans are afoot to ensure that Cash Paymaster Services will no longer have a presence in their offices come the end of July.

Sassa appeared before the Portfolio Committee on Social Development yesterday to update MPs on its progress in complying with the Constitutional Court order to find a new social grants service provider.

Sassa executive manager for grants administration Dianne Dunkerly told the committee that Sassa was migrating all of their beneficiaries away from cash and that the need for CPS staff was also needed less.

She said their migration strategy depended on all old Sassa cards being replaced by new Post Office cards. Once that happened, there would no longer be a need for CPS in Sassa offices, she said.
