Public Protector defends Gordhan probe

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has posted a new YouTube video in which she defended announcing that she had sent a Section 7(9) notice to Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan, saying it was "not a secret" and similar actions had been done in the past. 

Mkhwebane appeared to be responding to statements made by the minister's spokesperson Adrian Lackay, who said it was "astounding" that she had made the announcement on YouTube. 

Lawyers for Gordhan have filed a review application asking the North Gauteng High Court to set aside this report, with the minister, in an affidavit, accusing Mkhwebane of exhibiting "stunning incompetence, irrationality and negligence" in the performance of her duties.

 

Moody's says risk of SA economy hitting recession in 2019 are high

Ratings Agency Moody’s says that the odds that the South African economy could experience a technical recession in 2019 are high.

Moodys released its latest Global Macro Outlook on Thursday.

Moody's attributes what it describes as South Africa's "persistent economic weakness" to lacklustre domestic private sector demand.

The South African economy grew by 0.8% in 2018 after a technical recession in the first half of the year.

 

Parties consider a committee overseeing the Presidency

Political parties represented in Parliament are discussing an oversight committee over the Presidency.

In a Rules Committee meeting, Inkatha Freedom Party chief whip Narend Singh suggested that there be a committee overseeing the Presidency.

While the ANC, IFP, DA and the African Christian Democratic Party were keen on a committee overseeing the Presidency, the EFF however was not convinced.
