Nelson Mandela International Day celebrations underway

As Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated for the 10th year, thousands of South Africans will be heading out to spend their 67 minutes in commemoration of the late former president Nelson Mandela's birthday. 

Mandela would have turned 101 on July 18.

The concept to celebrate his birthday by doing an act of kindness was first introduced in 2009 by former president Jacob Zuma. 

President Cyril Ramaphosa was scheduled to kick-start the day by visiting RX Radio, the Red Cross Children's Hospital radio station that is staffed by children at the hospital in Rondebosch, in Cape Town.

 

Western Cape has fastest growing economy in SA

Western Cape premier Alan Winde has said the province has the fastest growing economy in South Africa and has attracted R100-billion in foreign direct investment under the administration of the DA.

Winde said his province has a proven track record in creating jobs.

He said Cape Town, the provincial capital, had been named the top financial centre in sub-Saharan Africa, and the region had become firmly established as Africa’s technology hub.

 

Nehawu 'disappointed' by government's intent to cut 30 000 public service jobs

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union expressed disappointment by the department of public service and administration's intent to cut more than 30 000 jobs.

During his budget vote speech in parliament, public service and administration minister Senzo Mchunu said the department would open an opportunity for civil servants who preferred to go on early retirement without penalties to do so.

In a statement, Nehawu opposed the move, saying the government should strengthen the public service by implementing strategies that would enable workers to be more effective and productive.
