Ramaphosa says South Africa has identified alleged instigators of violence

President Cyril Ramaphosa has revealed that security agencies have identified a number of people suspected of instigating violence this week in South Africa and that his government would not allow "anarchy and mayhem" to prevail.

Ramaphosa made the remarks when he visited eThekwini Municipality, which includes the port city of Durban, one of the worst-hit areas in a week of looting that destroyed hundreds of businesses and killed more than 100 people.

He said the government is extremely concerned about what happened.

25 000 soldiers would be deployed to flashpoints soon, up from 10 000 troops already on the ground.

 

130 suspects appear in court for looting in Tshwane

The City of Tshwane has reported that 130 suspects have appeared in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court for public violence, theft and possession of stolen goods looted over the past few days as the country dealt with lawlessness following former President Jacob Zuma’s arrest.

Tshwane Mayor Randall Williams said the South African Police Service and the South African National Defence Force would remain in the city to maintain law and order.

He commended law enforcement teams for working with the communities and stakeholders, adding that an intelligence operation had been launched to recover some stolen goods.

 

16 435 new Covid-19 cases recorded, as deaths increase by 377

South Africa recorded 16 435 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 infections and 377 deaths, bringing the death toll to 65 972.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases said, as of Thursday, the country recorded 2 253 240 laboratory-confirmed cases.

Gauteng is the most impacted, with 772 196 confirmed cases in total, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 373 285 and the Western Cape at 357 025.
