Gauteng records highest Covid-19 death toll three days running

Gauteng is quickly becoming the epicentre of coronavirus cases in South Africa, recording the most Covid-19-related deaths for three consecutive days and barely trailing behind the Western Cape in terms of positive cases.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize released the latest coronavirus figures, which paint a stark picture for South Africa's most densely populated province.

Nationally, 10 134 new cases have been reported, bringing the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases to 215 855. On Monday, the number was 205 721, breaching the 200 000 mark.

 

First 1 100 foreign mineworkers scheduled to cross back into South Africa

The first batch of 1 100 foreign mineworkers is scheduled to cross back into South Africa.

This is part of a total of 12 500 gold and platinum workers returning from Mozambique, Lesotho and Eswatini, formerly Swaziland.

Intergovernmental meetings have taken place to debottleneck border crossing through pre-sized scheduling, in liaison with the Department of Health on quarantining arrangements and in liaison with South African Police Services on logistics and routes buses must follow.

Minerals Council South Africa is due to report on foreign mineworker numbers back in South Africa, as well as the impact on the country of the coronavirus situation.

 

ISIS warns SA not to get involved in Mozambique

ISIS has warned South Africa that it would "open the fighting front" within South Africa's borders, should it get involved in Mozambique's Cabo Delgado province.

An organisation linked to ISIS, Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jamaah, has been waging a violent insurgency in Mozambique's northernmost province, Cabo Delgado.

It started in 2017, but the violence has escalated in recent months.

They want to establish an extremist form of Islamic law in the province, even though their motives have been questioned by some as more compelled by greed.
