ANC NEC calls for disciplinary action following Nkandla gathering

The African National Congress National Executive Committee has instructed the party’s Secretary General’s office and Provincial Secretary to urgently investigate and initiate disciplinary action against the organisers responsible for the gathering at Nkandla over the weekend, in defiance of Covid-19 regulations.

Scores of former President Jacob Zuma’s supporters convened outside his Nkandla home to protect him from going to jail.

ANC acting Secretary General Jessie Duarte said that threats and violence in response to legal and judicial matters were abhorrent and would not be tolerated.

She stressed that South Africans, including members of the ANC, had a responsibility to protect themselves and others against Covid-19.

 

South Africa records 12 513 new infections and 331 new deaths

South Africa has recorded 12 513 new confirmed Covid-19 infections on Monday and 331 deaths, bringing the official death toll to 62 171.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases this represents a 31.6% positivity rate.

Gauteng recorded 709 628 confirmed cases, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 360 866 and the Western Cape with 333 542.

Over 3.5-million people have been vaccinated. More than 145 000 vaccine doses have been administered in the last 24 hours.

 

Health department will reimburse private sites vaccinating uninsured people
The National Department of Health is encouraging private Covid-19 vaccination sites to proceed with the inoculation of all uninsured but registered people over 50 years of age, with the assurance that the department will reimburse sites.

The department and information technology company Medikredit are finalising the reimbursement process.

The Department has said that as part of efforts to accelerate the vaccination programme nationally, uninsured and insured people will be allocated to the most appropriate site, whether it is a private or public site.

Registrations on the Electronic Vaccination Data System opened on July 1 for people aged 50 to 59. More than 354 000 people registered for the Covid-19 vaccine jab on day one of registrations.
