City Power cuts off Nigerian consulate's electricity over unpaid bill of more than R400 000

City Power has disconnected the electricity at the Nigerian consulate in Johannesburg after it failed to pay a R406 000 bill.

Day two of the City Power three-day revenue collection effort in Region E kicked off with a visit to smaller businesses in and around Alexandra, Wynberg and Kew.

The bulk electricity supplier is owed R4-billion in unpaid bills, and defaulting businesses in Region E owe it R363-million. 

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said it hoped to retrieve R36-million of this debt within three days.

One such business was a church which owed R740 000

 

EFF loses bid to appeal AfriForum's interdict in land occupation case

The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has dismissed with costs the Economic Freedom Fighters' application for leave to appeal an interdict by lobby group AfriForum, which it sought to prevent the party from inciting land occupations.

AfriForum launched the application for an interdict in 2017 after it said EFF leader Julius Malema had instructed supporters to invade and occupy plots of land.

The group argued that Malema's instruction was a contravention of the Riotous Assemblies Act and the Trespass Act.

Detailing the reasons for dismissing the EFF's most recent application, Gauteng High Court Judge Peter Mabuse cited an earlier judgment by the Constitutional Court, which found that the EFF acted criminally and unconstitutionally.

 

Gambian vice president dies of illness

Gambia's Vice-President Badara Alieu Joof has died of illness in India.

The 65 year old Joof was appointed vice president of the West African country in 2022 and he had previously served as education minister.

According to Gambian President Adama Barrow said that Joof had died "after a short illness".

The vice president left Gambia about three weeks ago to seek medical treatment.
