Full bench to hear Ramaphosa's interdict application against Zuma

A full bench of the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg will hear President Cyril Ramaphosa's application for an interdict against his predecessor's private prosecution on Thursday.

Former president Jacob Zuma accuses Ramaphosa of "being [an] accessory after the fact to crimes committed by, among others, Advocate Downer" and alleged breaches of the National Prosecuting Authority Act.

Advocate Billy Downer is prosecuting Zuma on behalf of the State for arms deal-related corruption.

Ramaphosa argues that Zuma's prosecution is being done with an ulterior motive as he was served with the summons the day before the ANC's national elective conference started but Zuma denies that.

 

DA says it will fight Eskom’s move to Energy Dept

The Democratic Alliance says it is against the ANC’s intention to move Eskom from the Department of Public Enterprises to the Ministry of Energy, overseen by Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe.

The DA says the move will have significant financial implications for the country.

DA Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises Ghaleb Cachalia is fearful that private investment will be passed over and that corruption and loadshedding will flourish.

He highlighted that in the recent run-up to outgoing Eskom CEO André de Ruyter’s resignation, Mantashe displayed his “destructive influence”.

 

Gabon names vice-president and new prime minister

Gabon's President Ali Bongo has appointed the country's first female Prime Minister Rose Christiane Ossouka Raponda to the role of vice-president and named a new PM to replace her.

59 year old Ossouka Raponda was appointed in July 2020 after her predecessor stepped down.

She was defence minister before that.

She had to navigate a delicate political scene as prime minister after a coup attempt in 2019 while Bongo was on prolonged medical leave following a stroke.
