Making headlines: Modise receives panel's report on Mkhwebane's removal, expect steep fuel prices in March and, Ivory Coast to be second country to receive Covid-19 vaccines from COVAX scheme

Modise receives panel's report on Mkhwebane's removal

Speaker of the National Assembly Thandi Modise has received a report from an independent panel that had to determine whether there is a prima facie case for advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane's removal as Public Protector.

However, the panel's recommendation would remain under wraps until next week.

Modise appointed Justice Bess Nkabinde, advocate Dumisa Ntsebeza SC and advocate Johan de Waal SC in November last year to the panel.

The panel had to conduct a preliminary inquiry and assess whether there was prima facie evidence to show that Mkhwebane was guilty of misconduct; was incapacitated; or was incompetent.

Expect steep fuel prices in March

Fuel users need to prepare for steep hikes across the boards with petrol prices expected to climb by 66 cents per litre, while diesel and illuminated paraffin will be up 57c/l and 49c/l respectively.

The AA outlining its fuel price estimates for March, based on the unaudited month-end fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund.

The association noted that the rand had performed well against the dollar, but it was not enough to offset the climb in oil prices.

Ivory Coast to be second country to receive Covid-19 vaccines from COVAX scheme

Ivory Coast was due to receive a shipment of Covid-19 vaccines from the sharing facility COVAX on Friday, becoming the second country to benefit from a programme meant to ensure fairer distribution amid a global scramble.

A plane carrying 504 000 doses was expected to touch down in the commercial capital Abidjan from 10:00am local time.

By the end of this year, COVAX plans to deliver nearly 2-billion doses to over 90 low and middle-income countries, hoping to even a playing field that has seen wealthier nations vaccinate millions while comparatively few have received shots in poorer parts of the world.
