New Tshwane mayor cancels controversial GladAfrica contract

Newly elected Tshwane Mayor Stevens Mokgalapa has announced that the City has cancelled the scandal-ridden GladAfrica contract.

Mokgalapa made the announcement at a media briefing in Pretoria early on Monday morning.

Last month, embattled municipal manager of the City of Tshwane Moeketsi Mosola did an about-turn regarding the GladAfrica scandal, conceding that the expenditure for the tender was in fact irregular, as stated by the Auditor General.

 

Ramaphosa announces SIU Special Tribunal to fast track recovery of State funds

President Cyril Ramaphosa has established a Special Investigating Unit Special Tribunal, in an effort to fast track the recovery of funds lost to the State from corruption or irregular spending.

The Presidency said that there was a need to fast-track the finalisation of matters that had been referred for civil litigation after the conclusion of an investigation.

Spokesperson Khusela Diko said fast-tracking these matters through the Special Tribunal will enable the SIU to recover monies and or assets lost by State institutions through irregular and corrupt means; ensuring that those who are responsible for the loss of monies and or assets by State institutions are held accountable.

 

Deputy Finance Minister Mondli Gungubele testifies at PIC inquiry

Deputy Finance Minister Mondli Gungubele, who is also chairperson of the Public Investment Corporation's board, today arrived at the public inquiry chaired by former Supreme Court of Appeal Justice Lex Mpati to give evidence before the probe set up by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The PIC, the biggest asset manager in Africa and which manages almost R2-trillion in government pension and other funds, has been mired in controversy with allegations of impropriety against its directors regarding some of its investment decisions.

Mpati resumed the public hearings with a call for any persons with "information relevant to our terms of reference" to contact the commission.

The inquiry's evidence leader told the commission that Gungubele - the former Ekurhuleni Mayor - had volunteered to come and testify, and had not been subpoenaed.
