Court dismisses Zuma's bid to appeal prosecutor ruling in Arms Deal case

Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Piet Koen has dismissed a bid by former president Jacob Zuma to appeal an earlier ruling rejecting his attempt to have the prosecutor in his arms deal corruption trial taken off the case for alleged bias.

The judgment means Zuma's trial will move forward on April 11.

Zuma has pleaded not guilty to charges of corruption, money laundering and racketeering in a long-running case over an arms deal in the 1990s.

Zuma has claimed he is the victim of a political witch-hunt.

 

Nersa kicks off consultations on Eskom’s latest R10.7bn clearing account application

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa has initiated public consultations on Eskom’s latest regulatory clearing account application.

The utility is seeking to recover an additional R10.7-billion for the 2020/21 financial year – a period which coincided with South Africa’s most intensive Covid lockdowns.

Nersa has published a consultation paper and has requested stakeholders to submit written comments by March 7, after which it will host three days of virtual public hearings from March 9 to 11.
A decision will be made on April 28.

 

Cape Town launches renewable energy tenders to make it SA's first 'load-shedding free city'

The City of Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said new tenders have been launched to procure as much as 300 megawatt of renewable energy for the city.

Two weeks ago, when the country was gripped by Stage 2 load-shedding, Hill-Lewis issued a statement indicating the city planned to launch new tenders for Independent Power Producers.

The IPPs are part of the city's efforts to reduce load-shedding and its negative impacts.

Hill-Lewis said that Cape Town is working to be the first "load-shedding-free city" in the country.
