S.Africa medical association says J&J vaccines could arrive on Tuesday

The South African Medical Association’s chairperson Angelique Coetzee told a news outlet on Tuesday that South Africa is expecting the first Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine doses to arrive today.

Vaccinations of healthcare workers with the J&J vaccine could start on Wednesday, Coetzee added.

 

South Africa plans to 'share' 1-million AstraZeneca doses via African Union

Meanwhile, South Africa plans to "share" the 1-million AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine doses it received from the Serum Institute of India with other African countries via the African Union.

Anban Pillay, deputy director-general at the Department of Health, said it was not true that South Africa had asked the Serum Institute to take the 1-million doses back, as reported by Indian daily The Economic Times.

Pillay added that South Africa planned to recover the money spent on the AstraZeneca doses, which arrived in the country at the start of the month, but was still finalising how to do that.

 

And, Solidarity Fund approves beneficiaries of GBV support funding

The Solidarity Fund has approved 321 community-based organisations and 11 large public benefit organisations as beneficiaries for one-off funding that will support the elimination of gender-based violence.

The organisation said the value of the funding is R61.25-million and R9.99-million respectively and will impact about four-million people through various organisations providing services across the country.

South Africa saw an increase in gender-based violence cases when the country went under lockdown owing to the pandemic.

About 89 000 people will benefit from funding.
