Ramaphosa must show SA he takes accountability seriously

Ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address on Thursday, Amnesty International South Africa says his speech must show the country that he takes accountability seriously.

Ramaphosa will deliver his SoNA at 7pm at the Cape Town City Hall.

The organisation wants Ramaphosa to take action against those implicated in the July 2021 unrest.

On Monday, Ramaphosa made public the expert panel report into the July unrest, and he committed to outline the government's response to the findings and recommendations made in the report in his SoNA.

Amnesty International South Africa executive director Shenilla Mohamed said without real action on the report, the culture of impunity and lack of accountability would continue to have a negative impact on every level of society.

 

Bar says Malema and Mpofu seem to be using JSC for a political end

The General Council of the Bar of South Africa says the unfair questioning of Chief Justice candidates creates the impression that the Judicial Service Commission is used as a platform for "some political end".

It made the remarks after various calls for the replacement of Dali Mpofu, SC, as a JSC commissioner.

According to GCB chairperson Craig Watt-Pringle, the bar has been inundated with objections to the conduct seen at the JSC last week, particularly the conduct of Mpofu towards two of the candidates - Gauteng Judge President Dunstan Mlambo and Acting Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.

 

Eskom promises to reduce risk of load-shedding during SoNA

State power utility Eskom said it will do all in its power to ensure that the country does not experience load-shedding during the State of the Nation Address, which will be delivered by President Cyril Ramaphosa at the Cape Town City Hall on Thursday.

Eskom COO Jan Oberholzer acknowledged SoNA as an important event.

In the past few days Eskom has had to implement the first bouts of rotational power cuts for 2022. 

Oberholzer said Eskom is aiming to reduce the rest of load-shedding in general.

He promised that Eskom would try to reduce the risk of load-shedding and to ensure that it fulfils its mandate to the country’s economy.
