ANC, ABC coalition comes to an end in eThekwini

The ANC has successfully removed Abantu Batho Congress party leader Philani Mavundla from the eThekwini Metro executive committee.

There were 125 votes for Mavundla to be removed and 59 against, with five abstaining.

This means that Mavundla will no longer be deputy mayor or chairperson of the Human Settlements and Infrastructure committee.

Tensions between Mavundla and eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda appear to be behind the move to remove Mavundla.

 

Hawks raid Tembisa Hospital over 'illegally' awarded R850 million contracts

The Hawks descended on Tembisa Tertiary Hospital today to conduct a search and seizure operation over allegedly illegal multimillion-rand contracts awarded at the institution.

Gauteng Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale, said the operation emanated from an inquiry into allegations of fraud and corruption at the hospital.

She said they had received information about R850-million in irregular contracts awarded to 217 service providers by supply chain management at the hospital.

The investigation comes after the assassination of whistleblower Babita Deokaran, a chief director of financial accounting at the Gauteng health department. 

 

City of Joburg request to be excluded from loadshedding is 'currently being reviewed'

The City of Johannesburg's request for a three-day load shedding exemption is under review, according to Eskom.

Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse submitted the urgent request to the power utility, as City Power officials battled to clear an increasing backlog of faults and power outages that occurred during torrential rains in Gauteng.

Yesterday, there were more than 4 000 service calls related to outages, according to Environment and Infrastructure Services MMC Michael Sun. A significant proportion was for issues that persisted for multiple days.

Areas that were hit the hardest were the larger Roodepoort area, Hursthill, Northcliff, and Lenasia, where infrastructure was severely damaged by flooding.
