A survey reveals that ANC strengthens support but remains under 60%

A new South African Institute of Race Relations poll shows the ANC's support has increased ahead of the 2019 general elections, while the country's two biggest opposition parties, the DA and Economic Freedom Fighters, have lost ground.

According to the poll results the ANC's support in December comes in at 56%, up from 52% in September. The DA's support has declined to 18% from 23% in September. The EFF is on 11%, down from 13% in September.

Gareth van Onselen, head of politics and governance at the IRR, has emphasised that the poll is not a prediction but "a snapshot in time" of the electorate between November 26 and December 4, 2018.

 

Eskom says no load shedding scheduled for Monday, but risk remains high

Power utility Eskom says it will not implement Stage 1 rotational load shedding from 9am as usual, but warned that the electricity system remained tight and the risk of load shedding remained high should power station units fail to return as planned.

The troubled power utility has been implementing rotational load shedding for more than a week now as it struggles to get the right amount of coal at its power stations.

Eskom says it will keep customers informed should there be any change.

 

City of Johannesburg to seek meeting with new NPA head over prosecutions

The city of Johannesburg will seek a meeting with incoming National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi once she assumes office, over some of the department's decisions to withdraw apparently clear-cut cases, mayor Herman Mashaba said.

On Sunday night an investigative television show aired a programme on corruption allegedly uncovered by the city around the dropping of "prosecutable" cases by the National Prosecuting Authority.

Mashaba said on numerous occasions the city has sought to engage the NPA to raise its concern on the apparent lack of attention paid to fraud and corruption matters referred to it by the city.
