NPA says prosecutors will have to 'strategically select' cases to prosecute after Zondo Commission

Prosecutions boss Advocate Shamila Batohi said ahead of an anticipated "avalanche" of cases emanating from the State Capture Inquiry, the National Prosecuting Authority has made corruption its priority.

Batohi said the NPA was preparing to strategically select cases arising from the State Capture Inquiry, based on its limited resources.

She added that fighting corruption will remain the NPA's top priority.

Batohi said there will be an expectation that there will be quick successes and added that there is a big difference between testifying in a commission and putting together a watertight case.

 

Julius Malema's assault trial postponed to next year

The assault case against EFF leader Julius Malema and MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi has been postponed to next year. 

The pair made a brief appearance in the Randburg Magistrate's Court today, where the matter was postponed to 7 April 2022. Members of the EFF gathered outside the court to show their support.

The court heard that the lawyer representing them was experiencing Covid-19 symptoms on Monday.

Malema and Ndlozi are on trial for allegedly assaulting Lieutenant Colonel Johannes Jacobus Venter at Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's funeral on 14 April 2018.

 

Gambian President Barrow wins re-election

Gambian President Adama Barrow has comfortably won re-election, though he may face a legal challenge from opposition candidates who rejected the results because of unspecified irregularities.

The vote was the first in 27 years without disgraced former President Yahya Jammeh, who was forced into exile in Equatorial Guinea after refusing to accept defeat to Barrow in 2016.

Jammeh's despotic 22-year rule over the small West African nation of 2.5-million people, which began with a 1994 coup, was characterised by killings and torture of political opponents.
