Sheriff of High Court raids ANC's Luthuli House in search of assets

The Sheriff of the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg descended on the ANC's Luthuli House headquarters today in search of assets. 

This was after events company Ezulwini Investments attached the party's accounts and other physical assets, to recover more than R100-million the party owes it for work done during the 2019 elections campaign.

A truck of the Sheriff was seen outside the party's headquarters in Johannesburg. 

Peter Fernando of Ezulwini said the ANC is undermining the justice system.

 

Ramaphosa concerned developed countries not meeting climate funding obligations

President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed concern that developed economies are still not meeting their obligations to support developing countries with the finance, technology and capacity building needed for effective climate actions.

Following his attendance at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai, known as COP28, he said, “the operationalisation at COP28 of a fund to help vulnerable countries with loss and damage caused by climate change is a step in the right direction, but it will need substantial funding if it is to fulfil its purpose”.

He stated that funding through entities such as the Green Climate Fund and Adaptation Fund had been negligible.

He is mindful that the discussions at COP28 have significant implications for South Africa.

Ramaphosa said the impact of climate change is a measurable reality in South Africa, with poor, rural communities in particular bearing the brunt. 

 

Corruption trial of Israeli PM Netanyahu resumes

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is due to face the resumption of his long-running trial on numerous corruption charges, after a pause due to the war in Gaza.

A court in Jerusalem is set to start hearing the case, which is focused on several corruption charges against Netanyahu.

The trial was paused on an emergency order from the country’s justice minister following Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7.

Netanyahu has been charged with fraud, bribery and breach of trust in three cases filed in 2019, known as Case 1 000, 2 000 and 4 000.

Bribery charges carry a sentence of up to 10 years in jail and/or a fine while fraud and breach of trust carry a prison sentence of up to three years.

Israel’s longest-serving prime minister has denied any wrongdoing.
