More 'disgust' and outrage over Zandile Gumede’s appointment as KZN MPL

The South African Communist Party in KwaZulu-Natal said on Thursday it was “baffled, disappointed and flabbergasted" at corruption-accused former eThekwini mayor, Zandile Gumede, being sworn in as a member of provincial legislature. 

Gumede was sworn in as an MPL on Wednesday, taking the place of ANC KZN spokesperson and MPL Ricardo Mthembu, who died last month due to Covid-19. 

The EFF’s provincial media liaison officer Nokulunga Ngobese said the party noted Gumede's new position "with disgust", adding it was "not surprising" that she had been elevated from a PR councillor - a position she retained after being axed as mayor - to MPL. 

General secretary of Abahlali baseMjondolo Nomusa Sizani said Gumede’s appointment was an insult to women and a disgrace to the women of South Africa and accused Gumede of being an oppressor of women.

 

SA parliament committee wants speedy prosecutions in Covid-19 corruption

The South African parliament's standing committee on public accounts says it is seriously concerned with allegations of corruption relating to coronavirus procurement and wants those implicated to be successfully prosecuted.

The committee met with the head of the country's Special Investigating Unit, tasked with probing the allegations.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered the SIU to investigate allegations of corruption around the government's spending towards the fight against the coronavirus, including charges of impropriety in giving tenders.

 

DBE school nutrition report requested by court lacks crucial details

Not-for-profit organisation Section27, Equal Education Law Centre, representing Equal Education, and the governing bodies of two Limpopo schools have written to Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and the department’s MECs asking for further details on the National School Nutrition Programme progress report.

In July, the Gauteng High Court ordered the Department of Basic Education to roll out the programme to eligible children, whether or not they returned to school, and Motshekga and the MECs were also ordered to update the court on the implemented plans every 15 days.

Secton27, EELC and the GBs say the last report filed by the DBE and provinces lacks detail on crucial aspects of the nutrition programme in some provinces.
