Ace Magashule loses ConCourt bid to appeal ANC suspension

The Constitutional Court has shut the door on suspended ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule's hopes of returning to his official duties at Luthuli House.

The apex court issued a short judgment yesterday, dismissing with costs his application for leave to appeal his suspension from the ANC.

The Constitutional Court said it has concluded that, although there are no reasonable prospects of success on the merits of the application for leave to appeal, the delay in bringing the application for leave to appeal is minimal.

Magashule had approached the Constitutional Court after the Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed his application for leave to appeal his suspension in January.

 

KZN Premier Dube-Ncube announces new executive council

KwaZulu-Natal’s first woman Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube announced her new Provincial Executive Council today, a day after her election.

Former Premier Sihle Zikalala has been appointed MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs while the new ANC Chairperson in KZN, Sboniso Duma, replaces Ravi Pillay as Economic Development and Tourism MEC.

The MEC for Health remains Nomagugu Simelane, MEC for Social Development is Nonhlanhla Khoza, MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works is Dr Nkululeko Ntuthuko Mahlaba and Peggy Nkonyeni is MEC for Finance.

Dube-Ncube appointed Bongi Sithole-Moloi as MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development; Sipho Hlomuka as MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison; Mbali Frazer is the MEC for Education; and Amanda Mapena is the new MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture.

Addressing the media in Durban, Dube-Ncube said the province will fast-track issues relating to the revival of the provincial economy and relating to the creation of jobs.

 

SIU to probe claims of corruption at Limpopo and Eastern Cape water boards

The Special Investigating Unit is launching probes into the running of two water boards – Lepelle Northern Water in Limpopo and Amatola Water in the Eastern Cape.

President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a proclamation authorising the SIU to investigate allegations of corruption and maladministration at both water boards and to recover any financial losses suffered by the state through corruption and negligence.

Lepelle Northern Water spokesperson Yolande Nel said the water board would not comment on the probe as the "investigation is under way". Nel referred all queries to the SIU.

Amatola Water spokesperson Nosisa Sogayise said while Amatola Water has not been officially informed about the matter it welcomes the investigation.
