Nomusa Dube-Ncube officially sworn in as new KZN Premier

The African National Congress's Nomusa Dube-Ncube has been sworn in as KwaZulu-Natal's new premier following a special sitting of the provincial legislature today.

Dube-Ncube was chosen as the ANC's preferred candidate to take the top job, after the resignation of former premier Sihle Zikalala.

She was sworn in after beating the Democratic Alliance's candidate Mmabatho Tembe. The Inkatha Freedom Party did not field any candidates.

Dube-Ncube is the first female premier to be elected to lead KwaZulu-Natal since the advent of democracy in 1994.

 

KZN MEC Ravi Pillay bows out of provincial legislature in the wake of Zikalala's resignation

KwaZulu-Natal Economic Development and Tourism MEC Ravi Pillay has announced that he will resign from his portfolio and the provincial legislature.

Pillay's exit followed Sihle Zikalala's resignation last week, after he suffered a humiliating defeat at the ANC's KwaZulu-Natal elective conference, where he failed to make the list for the provincial executive committee.

Pillay announced his departure from office in a letter to his staff at the department and thanked them for their service.

In the letter addressed to the head of the department, Pillay said his resignation came after discussions with the ANC.

 

And, Herman Mashaba denies ActionSA is in crisis and blames 'ANC tendencies' for recent KZN resignations

Herman Mashaba says ActionSA in KwaZulu-Natal is not in crisis, despite a series of resignations by regional leaders who cited elitism and racism as reasons for their departure from the party’s leadership structures.

ActionSA has disbanded its provincial executive committee following a meeting of its senate on Tuesday. 

Party chairperson Michael Beaumont said in a statement that the decision was taken after observations that some members were intent on damaging ActionSA's image. 

ActionSA eThekwini chairperson Busisiwe Ntshingila resigned this week in a letter to the party. 

She described the party as being no different to the African National Congress. 

Another resignation came from Mohammed Khan, a regional chairperson in the uMgungundlovu region. 

ActionSA women’s forum chairperson Monica Mgaga also resigned, saying people who had helped grow the party were overlooked for promotions. 

MVJ Mlangeni from the uThukela region said his resignation as chairperson was because of the party’s elitism.
