MKMVA slams Covid-19 graft

South African liberation struggle veterans have condemned the looting and corruption that has characterised the disbursement of a coronavirus emergency fund, in which some members of the ruling ANC have been implicated.

The Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association said any party member found guilty of graft should be "mercilessly exposed and driven out".

MKMVA spokesperson Carl Niehaus said nothing can be more depraved than stealing from the poor, destitute and hungry, and enriching oneself at their own cost.

WHO experts expected in S Africa to assist with Covid-19 response

The World Health Organization has deployed 43 global senior experts to South Africa to assist the country with its coronavirus response.

Seventeen experts will touch down in South Africa on Wednesday and will complete a period of quarantine and initiation before being deployed within the Department of Health and across various provinces.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said bringing in the health experts would improve South Africa’s health strategies during the pandemic and accelerate the country’s path towards health care reform.

South Africa could experience a second surge of coronavirus cases

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has said that the real risk of experiencing a "second wave" of coronavirus cases remains, so containment measures must not be abandoned.

Mkhize held an early-morning virtual briefing to update South Africans on the current state of affairs regarding the health department's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said until South Africans are completely safe, government will continue to review restrictions and, if necessary, certain restrictions will remain in place.
