SA has enough supply to vaccinate population

President Cyril Ramaphosa said the country’s vaccination rate will increase significantly in the coming weeks owing to the arrival of more vaccine doses, which will ensure that the country has a comfortable supply of stock to vaccinate the population.

The country’s current vaccination rate is 220 000 people a day, with over 7.5-million people vaccinated, three-million of whom are fully vaccinated.

Last week, the Department of Health received almost 1.5-million single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccines and 5.66-million Pfizer vaccines from the US.

Government releases land for restitution claims

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Patricia de Lille has approved the release of various parcels of land in the North West, Western Cape and Mpumalanga provinces for three claimant communities.

Government opened the land restitution claims process in 1994 to allow families and communities who were dispossessed during apartheid to lodge claims.

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure is tasked with releasing land to the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development for transfer to claimant communities.

She said the remaining processes and the ultimate transfer of the land to the beneficiaries would be completed by the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Reform.

And, Zambian president sends in military to tackle pre-election violence

Zambia deployed the military to curb escalating political violence ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections on August 12, President Edgar Lungu said.

Two supporters of the ruling Patriotic Front party were hacked to death with machetes on Friday by attackers suspected to be members of the main opposition party, police said.

Four people were arrested in connection with the killings, police said.

In order to curb the political violence of the past two days, Lungu said he had authorised the military, including the army and air force, to help the police.
