Gordhan says South Africans can no longer be 'free riders' of democracy

South African citizens can no longer be "free riders" of democracy and need to actively work to secure State institutions, former finance minister Pravin Gordhan said yesterday.

He urged South Africans to either become whistleblowers or "find different forms of resistance".

Gordhan said in today’s South Africa, there wasn’t time for free riders and time to sit on the fence. He said it was time to make decisions about what was right and what was wrong.

 

DA wants Schabir Shaik's medical parole reviewed

The DA will petition Justice Minister Michael Masutha to seek a review of convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik's medical parole.

DA MP James Selfe said a court should determine if Shaik should return to prison or have his parole conditions altered, so the public no longer had to be fed the lie that he was terminally ill.

Shaik was released on medical parole on March 3, 2009, after serving just more than two years of a 15-year sentence for corruption.

 

ANC reinstates axed leadership of Western Cape's Dullah Omar region

The ANC national executive committee has set aside the provincial executive committee's decision to disband the leadership of the party's Dullah Omar region in the Western Cape.

The regional executive was disbanded by the provincial ANC after a meeting ahead of the party's national policy conference was disrupted and police were called.

ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said the party would be sending leaders to the province to explain its decisions.
