Mahikeng remains calm after violent protests

Mahikeng remains peaceful following three days of violent protests by residents to remove North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo.

Police spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said that despite a few disturbances on Friday evening, things have remained calm since President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the protesters on Friday.

Nine people were arrested on Friday for public violence, which brings the total number of arrests to 32 since the protests began.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane expressed his support for those calling for Mahumapelo’s removal, during a visit to Mahikeng on Saturday.

The EFF and the South African National Civic Organisation have called on the Public Protector to investigate former president Jacob Zuma and North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo on allegations that the premier gave Zuma a herd of cattle worth R1.5-million as a gift in 2016 using public funds.

The African Democratic Change party yesterday welcomed the resignation of its former president Makhosi Khoza, slamming her "dictatorial" leadership.

In a statement ADeC acting spokesperson Bongani Masilela said Khoza had presented herself as the supreme leader of the party by making dictatorial decisions which had put the party into disrepute.

On Saturday, Khoza announced that she was retiring from politics for a new opportunity.
