Making headlines: Load-shedding to be suspended at 10pm; Western Cape Premier Alan Winde announces 3 new portfolios in cabinet; And, Mashatile instructs ANC Eastern Cape bosses to hold elective conference within 7 days

 

Load-shedding to be suspended at 10pm

Eskom has announced that load-shedding will be suspended at 10pm today.

However, the utility cautioned that the system remains severely constrained and volatile.

Eskom expects to return to service nine generation units during the weekend - a unit at Hendrina and two generation units each at Arnot, Duvha, Majuba and Tutuka power stations.

The low weekend demand will assist in replenishing emergency reserves.

Some 5 353 MW of Eskom's power system is out on planned maintenance, while another 14 912 MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns. 

 

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde announces 3 new portfolios in cabinet

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has appointed David Maynier as the new Education MEC and has made changes to his cabinet.

Maynier was the MEC of Finance and Economic Opportunities.

This comes after Debbie Schäfer resigned as Education MEC to join her family in the UK and to return to the law profession.

As part of his cabinet reshuffle, Winde named Mireille Wenger as Finance and Economic Opportunities MEC. Wenger previously served as Democratic Alliance chief whip in the province.

Winde also named three new portfolios: Infrastructure, Mobility, and Police Oversight and Community Safety.

 

And, Mashatile instructs ANC Eastern Cape bosses to hold elective conference within 7 days

The controversial elective conference of the African National Congress Eastern Cape is now set to take place next week following a rubber-stamp from the party's national bosses.

This weekend, hundreds of delegates were expected at the East London International Convention Centre for the provincial congress, but it was postponed due to pending political disputes.

In a letter to Lulama Ngcukayitobi, co-ordinator of the provincial task team, ANC treasurer-general Paul Mashatile instructed that the conference be rescheduled within the next seven days.

According to Mashatile, the province is legally ready to proceed with its conference.
