South Africa needs to do 'a lot more' work to improve credit ratings

It has been two years since Standard & Poor's downgraded South Africa's foreign currency debt to junk status, and the sticking point is its weak economic performance.

Speaking during a panel discussion at the S&P Global Annual South Africa Conference, associate director of sovereign and IPF ratings Gardner Rusike shared views on SA's economic growth.

He said the major point for SA's Achilles heel is weak economic performance, which impacts on ratings negatively. He added that poor economic growth is constraining ratings from improving from junk status.

Ramaphosa gives Mashaba deadline to address issues in Alex

Dressed in ANC regalia, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the residents of Alexandra yesterday and called on local government to clean up the township.

Ramaphosa said he was giving Mayor Herman Mashaba and the City of Johannesburg municipality a chance.

The President was joined by Gauteng Premier David Makhura and he assured Alexandra residents that their message that they were “sick and tired of poor service delivery” was heard throughout the country.

He called on provincial government to meet with Mashaba to address the issues of Alexandra residents and urged them to do so by next week.

ANC launches political school named after OR Tambo

President Cyril Ramaphosa has launched the African National Congress political school, named after struggle stalwart Oliver Reginald Tambo.

The school was launched at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, in Johannesburg to honour Tambo's contribution to the struggle to liberate South Africa.

ANC secretary general Ace Magashule said the board comprised people who had a strong background in design, curriculum development and the delivery of political education.
