Ramaphosa finally appoints SABC board

Six months after the term of the last board came to an end, and following court action to force his hand, President Cyril Ramaphosa has finally appointed a new South African Broadcasting Corporation 12-member board. 

Ramaphosa designated Khathutshelo Ramukumba as chairperson and Nomvuyiso Batyi as the deputy chairperson of the SABC board.

Other notable figures on the new board include former Economic Freedom Fighters MP Magdelene Moonsamy, as well as former SABC head of news Phathiswa Magopeni. 

 

Motsoaledi defends R1.4-million chartered plane to bring Bester back to SA

Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has defended the R1.4-million spent to bring Thabo Bester and Dr Nandipha Magudumana back to South Africa from Tanzania.

On Tuesday, Motsoaledi told the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs that they had to charter a flight to bring the pair back at a cost of R1.4-million.

Motsoaledi was adamant that the State agencies involved in bringing Bester back to the country had made the right choice.

He added that the country has never deported anybody on a commercial flight.

 

IEC ready to host ‘corrupt free’ election in 2024

South Africa’s Independent Electoral Commission has assured South Africans of a "corrupt free" election as the country gears up to vote in the 2024 national and provincial election.

IEC deputy manager for civic and voter education Mfundo Shabane spoke exclusively with Polity saying that the IEC’s “transparent system” will ensure that there is no corruption.

The IEC will undertake rigorous voter education leading up to election day, the dates of which will be announced in the coming months.

Shabane said the IEC had begun preparations based on what was contained in the controversial Electoral Amendment Bill that was signed by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday.   

The 2024 election will be the first time an individual candidate will be able to contest the election without falling under any political party.
