The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal welcomes the appointment of the new Abaqulusi Local Municipality Manager (MM), Mr.Zwelihle Dlamini, after the municipality had been led by different Acting Municipal Manager's for eight months.

This comes after the DA had called on the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leadership last week, to have their Abaqulusi Mayor, Cllr.Mncedisi Maphisa appoint and sign the contract of the new MM. Even though the panel that was assigned to appoint an MM, the full council including the IFP, had agreed on the candidate to be appointed, the Mayor was in disagreement with this resolution and had the appointed MM removed by the SAPS from the municipality.

Having no Accounting Officer in the municipality would have brought service delivery to a standstill and municipal employees would not be paid their salaries.

We welcome the swift response from the IFP, this is a win for democracy. Abaqulusi residents and municipal employees cannot be held to ransom due to internal politics and factions.

The DA is committed to holding the government to account and ensuring that residents get service delivery.
