DA welcomes harsh sentences in the Ga-Seleka mob justice incident

The DA in Limpopo welcomes the Polokwane High Court’s sentence on 27-year-old Hlalefang Serumula and 30-year-old Sefako Isaiah Modipa to 18 years direct imprisonment respectively for the murder of Alpheus Majadibodu.

Mr. Majadibodu was attacked by a mob in Ga- Seleka more than a year ago but the motive for his attack remains unknown.

A total of 184 murder cases emanating from mob justice were reported for 2022/23 financial year broken down per district:

It is concerning that mob justice is on the increase in Limpopo.

More than 3 incidents of mob justice are reported weekly; most with fatal consequences.

While the DA understands the anger of communities who do not feel safe in their own homes, we urge communities not to take the law into their hands.

We do believe that lack of police visibility and the lack of police stations in rural villages contributes to incidents of mob justice in our province.

The DA cares about the rule of law and everyone caught in an act of wrongdoing has the right to a fair trial.

We call on SAPS to increase visibility especially in rural areas, implement anti-mob campaigns and educate communities on the dangers of mob justice.
