The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Lephalale has laid a complaint with the Environmental Management Inspectorate (Green Scorpions) against the Lephalale

Municipality over a large sewage spill in the town’s Central Business District (CBD).

During a recent oversight inspection, the DA noted that there is a sewage spill that flows along numerous businesses in the CBD of the town along Fox Odendaal Street and Jacobus Street.

The residents and businesses in the area have had to deal with this sewage overflow problem for over a year and it has remained unaddressed. The municipality has failed to fix the spill and blamed the blockage on fat buildup from a butchery in the area.

The DA however noted that the butchery has a functional fat trap in place to prevent any overflow that may occur as a result of blockages from the butchery’s waste.

The continuous flow of sewage has caused an unbearable stench and is negatively impacting businesses in the area. The sewage spill further poses a serious health risk.

The municipality’s failure to fix the sewage spill infringes on the residents’ right to a healthy and clean environment and also stifles efforts to encourage economic development that may create much needed employment in the area.

The DA is committed to ensuring residents in our communities are not exposed to raw sewage. The municipality must urgently address this matter.
