DA rejects illegal shutdown in Ficksburg, calls for constructive dialogue

25th May 2023

The Democratic Alliance (DA) firmly opposes the call for a shutdown in Ficksburg on 25 May 2023, emphasising that it is not a legally sanctioned form of protest. While we understand and empathise with the community's frustrations regarding their demands and the lack of service delivery, we cannot endorse or support this particular endeavour.

We firmly believe that the most effective way to bring about change in service delivery is through organized and constructive means of engagement.

In the interest of public safety, we strongly urge residents to avoid participating in any activities along the R26 during this time. It is crucial to prioritise the well-being and security of the community.

The DA is committed to amplifying the grievances of the community as outlined in the call for the shutdown. We will strive to ensure that these concerns are heard and addressed in the council. However, we believe that the power to hold the government accountable lies not only in protest actions but also in the democratic process. By exercising our right to vote in the 2024 elections, we can directly influence and challenge the current government's performance.

We encourage the community of Ficksburg to engage in constructive dialogue, advocate for their rights, and work together towards meaningful change. Let us harness the power of democratic participation and hold those in power accountable for delivering the services our community deserves.
