DA Leader John Steenhuisen and DA Ekurhuleni Mayoral Candidate Refiloe Nt’sekhe to visit residents of Angelo Informal Settlement

11th October 2021

Tomorrow, Tuesday 12 October 2021, DA Leader, John Steenhuisen and DA Ekurhuleni Mayoral Candidate, Refiloe Nt’sekhe MPL will address residents of Angelo Informal Settlement.

These residents of Ward 33 Ekurhuleni live on land that was once an active mine. They do not have water, electricity or sanitation.

The ANC-led Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality incurred R23 million fruitless and wasteful expenditure when it attempted to move 500 of Angelo’s 40 000 residents to a temporary settlement not far from where they currently reside.

A further R5.5 million was wasted when the municipality rendered the services of the Red Ants to guard the temporary structures.

After 62 days, the municipality’s contract with the Red Ants lapsed, and within 48 hours, the temporary structures were dismantled, and the materials used to construct them were stolen.

Instead of providing dignified housing to residents of informal settlements, the ANC in Ekurhuleni are happy to keep people living in squalor.

Steenhuisen and Nt'sekhe will be accompanied by DA Ekurhuleni Caucus Leader,Alderman Tania Campbell, Ward 33 Councillor Candidate, Ashley Hood, Boksburg Political Head, Jackie Riley and Germiston Political Head, Michele Clarke MPL.

There will be opportunities for photographs and interviews.

Date:            12 October 2021
Time:            13:00
Address:       Old Angelo Hotel, Main Reef Road, Boksburg.
