DA lays assault charges against ANC councillor after he allegedly attacks a female staff member

17th September 2021

The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has laid charges of assault against eThekwini ANC councillor, Sfiso Mngadi, after he allegedly assaulted one of our staff members in broad daylight outside the eThekwini electricity offices in Durban today.

The DA was outside the offices to protest against the ongoing electricity outages and broken streetlights. In an apparent effort to “defend” the ANC-run municipality, the councillor thought he would attack and assault a DA female staff member.

This is totally unacceptable in a democratic country where individuals are free to gather and demonstrate.

The alleged thuggish and brutal behaviour by the ANC councillor is entirely consistent with how the party deals with disputes, through violence and intimidation.

The DA will not be intimidated by ANC members or politicians in the lead up to this election.

The DA calls on the SAPS to act with speed and arrest Mngadi to ensure he answers for his attack on a defenceless woman.

We also call on the ANC leadership in eThekwini and KZN to take action against their councillor for allegedly assaulting a woman. They don’t need to wait for the police, they can act now!
